Lion’s Head - Adventure on the Bruce

Day One:
Your accommodation for the weekend will be at the “Lionheart Guest House”. Built in 1898 during the reign of Queen Victoria, great care was taken in maintaining its history while renovations were being done in 2008. Nestled among giant elms, manicured lawns and gardens, Lionheart is located centrally within the picturesque village of Lion’s Head. After you check in, you can take a stroll around the grounds where you will find wildflowers such as Jack in the Pulpit and Trilliums, or you may wish to spend the evening just relaxing in the comfortable living room.

Day Two:
After breakfast, pack a picnic lunch and you are ready for the start of your weekend adventure.   You have a choice of several activities. Hiking, Kayaking, Boating or Rock Climbing.

If hiking is your choice for today, you can access the Bruce Trail just steps from the house. There are loop trails that allow you to choose the distance and difficulty of hike you want to experience. You can also take the trail out to the “Potholes” that lie on the top of the escarpment. This trail is rough, but with many interesting features. The Pot Holes were created 400 million years ago by the glaciers eroding and wearing away the limestone.

The Lion’s Head area is a popular hiking and climbing destination. The area offers over 120 varied climbing routes, however only the top 100 feet of the 200 foot high cliff is climbable. Be sure to take a guidebook or a friend who knows the route. The cliffs of the Niagara Escarpment provide a fantastic view for the photographer. This area is also know for its rare plant life and is part of the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Reserve.

If you prefer something less adventurous, you may prefer to go kayaking or boating. Be sure to take your camera, as you will have a spectacular view of the rugged shoreline of the Niagara Escarpment.

After a busy day outdoors, relax and enjoy dinner this evening at Marydales.

Day Three:
Today will be a more relaxing. After breakfast, pack a picnic lunch and take a short drive to the Lion’s Head Nature Preserve to photograph wildflowers, take a drive up to Cabot Head to the Lighthouse Museum or go for a stroll along the beach in Lion’s Head.

In the afternoon, browse through Grandad’s Attic where you can find that special item for your home or cottage before you leave for home in the late afternoon after a memorable holiday in Lion’s Head.
